Titolo: Non fidarsi avventatamente in campagna elettorale. Sulla riscrittura di un detto di Epicarmo nel Commentariolum petitionis
Rivista/Miscellanea: Giornale Italiano di Filologia 76, 1
Anno edizione: 2025
Pagine: 150-160
Parole chiave: Philologie - Filologia - Philology, Sources - Fonti - Sources
Descrizione: This paper offers a detailed analysis of the reworking of a line by the Sicilian playwright Epicharmus in the Commentariolum petitionis, the precious brief handbook on canvassing for office attributed to Quintus Tullius Cicero ([Q. Cic.] comm. pet. 39). The one examined here is the only explicit quotation from works by other authors made in the Commentariolum. Far from being a translation from the Greek original (known, among others, via Cic. Att. 1, 19, 8 = Kassel - Austin 2001, 129-130 no. 218), it properly consists of an adaptation of Epicharmus’ line/motto within a specific (and Roman) context, namely that of the electoral campaign. Accordingly, this reworking of Epicharmus’ motto is characterised by connoted and connoting differences with a Ciceronian flavour, such as the mention of nervi and the transition from Epicharmus’ ἀπιστεῖν to the proverbial phrase non temere credere.
