Descrizione: [The Legal System and Rhetoric at the End of the Roman Republic. Cicero’s *De iure civili in artem redigendo* in the Context of International Research, Heidelberg, 9 May 2025] The conference “Legal System and Rhetoric at the End of the Roman Republic,” held in Heidelberg on 9 May 2025, commemorated the twenty-fifth anniversary of Ferdinando Bona’s death. It examined Cicero’s elusive project De iure civili in artem redigendo and the relationship between Roman law, rhetoric, and Greek philosophy. Christian Baldus outlined fundamental questions concerning the work’s existence, structure, intended audience, and Cicero’s status as a jurist. Juan Manuel Blanch Nougués endorsed Bona’s interpretation that the project aimed to provide legal knowledge for aspiring orators. He explored connections between Aristotelian dialectic and Roman jurisprudence, emphasizing argumentation, authority, and definition. René Brouwer stressed the importance of Stoic dialectic for legal reasoning and systematization, distinguishing its contribution from that of Aristotelian rhetoric and warning against overly broad associations between rhetoric and law. The ensuing discussion considered whether Cicero sought systematic exposition or methodological innovation, questioned rigid distinctions between jurists and non-jurists, and rejected links with alleged codification projects under Pompey and Caesar. Participants also debated Cicero’s philosophical commitments and the role of legal definitions. The conference demonstrated the value of interdisciplinary approaches while leaving central questions unresolved. [SR]
