Descrizione: Cicero's 'De natura deorum' is much more than a philosophical dialogue: It is a sophisticated and multi-layered narrative. Based on this thesis, this volume is the first to consistently separate the different levels on which Cicero uses virtuoso language to play a game with the reader. For he can convey philosophical messages in different ways: Rustically in extensive prose? Subtly as the constantly judgemental first-person narrator of the frame story? In a sparse manner as a younger self who barely gets a chance to speak as a dialogue figure? Or as 'Cicero latens', who indirectly demonstrates to the reader how philosophy should be practised via the arguments of the other dialogue characters? The novelty of the approach means that, in addition to the cryptic section 1.49, the much-discussed end of the work and the sceptical-academic dialogue figure Cotta, who is often seen in research as Cicero's "alter ego", also appear in a new light [Author]
