Descrizione: [Solère, Jean-Luc] [Abstract] In the Christian World, prayer considered as an act of language, human enunciation based on rules, was confronted with Graeco-Roman rhetoric and analyzed with the latter's methods and concepts very early on. As for profane discourse, attempts were made to clarify the nature of religious oratory, draw up a typology and discover the laws governing the production of the most effective persuasion possible. The article reviews the main arguments of the theological justification of prayer as a request, addressed to God, then taking one of the most consummate examples of medieval "ars orandi", William of Auvergne's "Rhetorica divina" (?. 1240), shows how Ciceronian rhetorical techniques exerted their influence on the conception of prayer.
