Descrizione: Anyone trying to understand the significance of the Peripatos for Cicero's thinking in general and for his literary activity in particular must always bear three things in mind: One must not forget that Cicero is writing for an audience with whom he can only assume a much lesser familiarity with the Greek philosophers than he himself possesses, an audience that he must first interest in the subject matter and its significance and whose interest he must keep alive. Accordingly, in De oratore, De re publica and De legibus he deals with the problems that seemed politically significant to his compatriots at the time, and only much later with all other areas, certainly after Lucretius, for example, had tried to introduce Epicurus' philosophy to the Romans. It is not possible to talk meaningfully about Cicero's reliance on one of the Hellenistic schools without also looking at the other schools and, above all, including the ideas that he passes on or discusses without mentioning individual names. When asking about Cicero's recourse to the Peripatetics, one must bear in mind that at the beginning of De natura deorum he only mentions Philon and Antiochos, Poseidonios and Diodotos as his teachers (I 6), none of whom can be counted as Peripatos; At the same time, however, it should be remembered that Cicero more than once emphasizes the Peripatetics' disagreement with the Academics, especially with the veteres Academici, but also with the Stoics -at least in substance, for which, as is well known, he occasionally refers to Antiochus (ND I 16).
