Descrizione: Read within the wider context of Cicero's De republica, the Dream of Scipio reworks the problematic ancient value of “hope” within the context of the dialogue's eschatology to present a creative solution to the republican problem of corruption caused by imperial expansion. Cicero seeks to preserve Rome from corruption by reconceptualising rather than eliminating hope. The Roman hope for a long-lasting empire is best attained when statesmen recognise the limits of empire and place their hopes not in unstable earthly glory but the true glory that virtuous leaders receive in the heavens. The Dream's reception by Vergil and Petrarch reveals that Cicero inaugurated an important discussion of the political salience of hope within eschatologies. Cicero, Vergil and Petrarch caution against our ability to see clearly and with full certainty the eschatological realisation of hope for just and virtuous rule in our own times and places. Nevertheless, they do not remove hope completely from human life.
