Descrizione: Christoph Schwameis discusses the speech In Muraenam by the reformist thinker Aonio Paleario and suggests that the speech in which the humanist scholar responds to Cicero’s Pro Murena closely follows, but opposes and inverts, the arguments which Cicero has proffered in what we know was a singularly successful defence, which saw the defendant unanimously acquitted. As Paleario’s speech thus literalises the trope of oppositio in imitando, Schwameis suggests, it passes ironic comment on the Ciceronian controversies which the publication of Erasmus’ Ciceronianus had refuelled. The programmatic function of In Muraenam is underlined by its position at the head of Paleario’s speeches, and by the paratextual apparatus, including a collection of excerpts from Cicero’s original speech, which it was afforded in the editions of his opera omnia. These were first printed at Lyon and then variously at Basel, where Paleario – who was later prosecuted and hanged – had entertained close contacts with liberal printers and scholars [Scheidegger Laemmle 2024,14].
