Descrizione: The article attempts to study Marcus Tullius Cicero's speeches at trials and public speeches in the Senate with a view to investigating corruption phenomena in the Roman society of the Late Republic. It is noted that Cicero drew attention to the judicial system as the biggest problem of the Roman state and society. He identified the main abuses in judicial proceedings, such as bribery of judges and witnesses, delaying the consideration of cases, interference of officials in court proceedings, and pressure on judges. The author of the speeches focused on the role of high-ranking officials, who were often elected through bribery and, while in office, paid for services through their actions or inaction. He pointed to a number of financial transactions during the elections related to corruption: transferring money to the appropriate account, storing money, receiving money personally, transferring cash to another person, and intermediary activities. High-ranking officials also used their opportunities for illicit enrichment through direct extortion, extortion and blackmail, fraudulent means of obtaining property through access to state documents, and embezzlement. This paper highlights the impact of corruption on the society of Ancient Rome, which was manifested in the destruction of traditional moral standards, devaluation of the concept of "honesty", and deliberate inaction of political elites. It is noted that the perception of corruption by Roman citizens and provincials depended on personal gain. There was a patron-client system in which the parties were mutually interested in evading duties and bribing officials to solve their own problems. The Romans negatively perceived only open extortion and demonstrative disregard for the law. Roman society rationally assessed the practical results of combating abuses and did not hope for an end to bribery and extortion. [Author] In ukrainian.
