Descrizione: Cicero’s philosophical writings are entangled in specific literary and cultural circumstances. On one hand, Latin literature had been developing in close intertextual connection with Greek literature from its very beginnings, on the other, the influence of Greek culture, and particularly Greek philosophy, was seen as a threat to Roman values. While continuing the Latin literary tradition of adapting Greek texts in the field of philosophy, Cicero has to confront the cultural tensions and persuade his Roman readers that there is a proper place for philosophy in the Roman society. Among many Greek authors, whose works are used by Cicero, Plato is the most revered one, as he skilfully combines the depth of thought with the beauty of style. The article focuses on Cicero’s De oratore as an example of creative imitation of Plato’s Phaedros. Through the emulation of Plato’s work, Cicero engages in the discussion on rhetoric and philosophy and proposes a reinterpretation of Plato’s critique of rhetoric [Author]. In Polish
