Descrizione: [Res publica est res populi: The political and legal thought of Marcus Tullius Cicero] This study interprets Cicero’s political and legal thought as an interconnected whole, challenging approaches that separate institutions from morality. Civic virtue, customary norms, written laws and natural justice jointly sustain republican order. Freedom and the common good depend on cooperation and balance between senatorial authority, magistrates’ powers and popular liberty, supported by civic participation and concord. Situated within Cicero’s political experience, this interpretation presents moral renewal, particularly among elites, as compatible with institutional reform that respects constitutional limits. It challenges presentist accounts of republican decline and rejects equating wealth with moral corruption. Cicero’s ideal statesman safeguards constitutional government against tyranny through virtue, competence and cooperation with senate and people. Finally, the study criticizes Quentin Skinner’s interpretation of republican liberty as selective and finds Roman Dmowski’s broader approach closer to Cicero’s. It argues that Roman republicanism’s contemporary relevance depends on recognizing the interdependence of its moral, legal and political dimensions. [PhR] In Polish
