Descrizione: The article analyses the category licentia and its compatibility with the words that form the ethical, philosophical, juridical and political apparatus of Cicero’s works. Cicero’s licentia is an ambiguous notion because it has either a positive (‘freedom’) or a negative connotation (‘outrage’, ‘licentiousness’, ‘anarchy’). The concept is combined both with the negative ethical, philosophical, juridical and political terms from Cicero’s works (audacia, crudelitas, cupiditas, improbitas, impunitas / inpunitas, injuria, libido, luxuria / luxuries, metus, servitus, temeritas, turpitudo, voluntas) and the positive ones (auctoritas, fides, fortitudo, gloria, imperium, judicium, jus, lex, libertas, mos, potestas, pudor, ratio, religio, sapientia), which the concept is opposed to.
