The occurences of the syntagm « giving and receiving » studies here deal with the exchanges of duties ("officia") and the exchange of benefits ("bénéficia"). These exchanges occur within the very social and political system which Cicero offers as a model to his son Marcus. Indeed, the exchanges of duties, placed under the control of "Fides" allow to put the interests of all in common by safeguarding private property. The exchanges of benefits generate "gratia" and "benevolentia" which, for Cicero, are indispensable to the exercise of power. Cicero often uses commercial vocabulary to qualify these various exchanges. [Author]
