Autore: Scappaticcio, Maria Chiara
Titolo: Il ricordo dei vivi: Cicerone (fin. 5.3), Petronio (43.1; 75,8), un Anonimo (CIL IV 8832)
Rivista/Miscellanea: Filologia Antica e Moderna, N.S. 60, 2
Anno edizione: 2025
Pagine: 439-449
Parole chiave: Héritage - Fortuna - Legacy, Philologie - Filologia - Philology
Descrizione: This paper offers an interpretation of the phrase vivorum meminerimus ("let us remember the living"), which appears twice in Petronius’ Satyricon, spoken by two different characters in distinct episodes of the Cena Trimalchionis (43.1; 75.8). At first glance, the expression appears to be an appeal to life; its popular, proverbial, and sapiential resonance is supported by parallel occurrences in Cicero’s De finibus (5.3) and in anonymous graffiti found on a Pompeian wall. Nevertheless, the phrase ultimately engages with the human fear of death. [Author]
