Descrizione: [Catilina and the tabulae novae. The problem of widespread debt and the utilitas rei publicae in Cicero’s orations] By presenting the legal and economic aspects of Catiline’s conspiracy, the author analyses contractual relationships giving rise to debt during the ‘pre-classical’ period of the late Roman Republic. Furthermore, the author draws attention to the socio-political dimension of the events of 63 BC; consequently, the text also includes themes relating to the public and constitutional aspects of the Roman Republic. An important element of the author’s deliberations is axiology and ethical–moral issues, including, amongst other things, the question of the ‘common good’ in the republican sense (utilitas rei publicae) or the constitutional order based on the famous Roman customs (mores maiorum). This article addresses the issue of widespread indebtedness in the Republic, which constitutes both a socio-political problem and a legal and economic one. The questions raised are: the classification of debts in Rome at the end of the Republic; the issue of debt in Cicero’s second speech against Catiline; the issue of debt in the light of the Constitution and the utilitas rei publicae; Catiline’s demagoguery and Cicero’s victory.
