Description: The aim of the senatus consultum instigated by M. Antonius on 1 September 44 BC was not to establish new honours for Caesar (i.e. to add to all supplicationes a day on which prayers of thanksgiving would be addressed to him), but only, in the supplicationes in honour of Munatius Plancus, to add the day prescribed by the senatus consultum of 45 for thanksgivings in Caesar’s name. Overall, Antonius’ religious policy after the Ides of March was much more coherent than Cicero claims: the moderate honours of 45 were respected, in contrast to the genuinely cultic honours decreed shortly before the assassination (the flaminate of divus Julius; an additional day in his honour at the Ludi circenses; the conveyance of his image on a tensa during the pompa and its placement on the pulvinar, at least at the Ludi Romani; the placement of a throne bearing Caesar’s gem-studded wreath beside the thrones and the exuviae of the gods).
