Description: [Comment] An overview of laws and legislative initiatives of the later Republic, including one by Afranius (Cic. Ad Q. fr. 2, 15, 4 and others) that has not yet been sufficiently recognised, shows that it is still difficult to separate "ambitus" from the permitted forms of electioneering. However, the reactions of contemporaries show that the behaviour was seen as contrary to the foundations of the republican order and therefore the observation that it was rooted in euergetism and patronage should not lead to a trivialisation of the phenomenon.
