Descrizione: This article is the first critical edition of Antonio Loschi’s (c. 1368–1441) “Preface” to his commentary on Cicero’s Orations. Loschi’s commentary, written in Pavia between 1390 and 1396, became the first historical-philological commentary on Cicero in the modern era and laid the foundations for the scholarly study of Cicero’s language. In theoretical terms, this commentary, which makes extensive reference, in particular, to Cicero’s De oratore (in an incomplete form known until 1421), raises the question of the independent significance of rhetoric as a science. Loschi’s commentary does not have a modern edition and has survived only in manuscripts and early printed editions. The text of the “Preface” to this work is published on the basis of six 15th-century manuscripts: BSB Clm 6721, Vat. Ott. Lat. 2040, Vat. Urb. Lat. 317, Vat. Pal. Lat. 1494, Vat. Pal. Lat. 1594, Vat. Lat. 7302. The article provides a textual analysis of the manuscripts and discusses the pedagogical and scholarly significance of the “Preface”. [Author] In russian.
