Descrizione: The author clearly distinguishes between the Roman tradition of education (Bildungskultur), which was pragmatic, family-oriented, and focused on utilitas/usus, and the exempla of Greek paideía, and shows the absence of institutionalized religious education in Rome (religious instruction was instead provided through specialized training, e.g., disciplina Etrusca). Against a backdrop of appropriation/Romanization of Greek culture, the author emphasizes the social role of the elites in transmission and sheds light on the place of Cicero (trained by Mucius Scaevola, future augur) at the intersection of education, rhetoric, and religion; he notably compares Varro and Cicero. The article cites De re publica 5.1 for the structuring reference provided by the quotation from Ennius' verse moribus antiquis res stat Romana virisque, transmitted in particular by Cicero, used to illustrate the normative weight of mos maiorum and the ideological continuity of the Republic. De oratore, a key work for Bildungskultur, clarifies the reference to the term Graeculus and Roman mistrust of ostentatious Hellenism. It is used to show Roman ambivalence towards Greek παιδεία and to shed light on the conjunction sapientia / eloquentia (De oratore 1.47.102; 1.13). Tusculanae disputationes 1.1–8 constitutes Cicero's explicit educational program (mention of the prologue as Cicero's self-presentation as a mediator of Greek philosophy) and serves to illustrate Cicero's desire to transmit philosophy to the Roman public. In Academica 1.4, Cicero emphasizes the non-dogmatic nature of his intellectual project. De finibus bonorum et malorum, a philosophical dialogue with strong political implications, is cited to illustrate the choice of Roman figures who were not specialists. De natura deorum 1.26 ff. and De divinatione (passim) are also cited. [PhR]
