Title: Caractérisation de l’ethos épistolaire de Cicéron à partir de l’étude des citations grecques versifiées de la Correspondance
Review/Collection: Université Grenoble Alpes
Year edition: 2021
Pages: 257
Description: [Abstract] This study aims to determine the distinguishing features that are characteristic of Cicero’s epistolary writing through the identification, processing and analysis of versified Greek quotations in Epistles. We will demonstrate that the quotation style present in Cicero’s letters – that is to say, of using the words of others for his own benefit – is linked to the discursive strategies at the origin of the construction of his ethos, the two being in fact complementary. Since the presence of Greek is never inconsequential in Epistles, we believe that it is by studying the versified Greek quotations in particular that we will be able to link – in part – the complexities of the Greco-Latin bilingual mechanism to the construction of the epistolary ethos of our author.
