Description: Cicero's Brutus was written in the spring of 46, probably after Caesar had Caesar had defeated the Republican army in Africa at Thapsus. Caesar was all-powerful, and the Republican Cicero may have quietly dreamed of murdering the tyrant, but could not think of giving in to his to publicly express his resentment against Caesar and the existing circumstances. The "Brutus" is essentially an apolitical writing about rhetoric.
