Descrizione: [Abstract] Cicero has been a fundamental reference point for school education and the system of artes liberales, especially for rhetoric and philosophy, from ancient times to the Renaissance. I intend to focus my attention on the Venetian environment in the second half of the 15th century and, in particular, on Giorgio Valla. This humanist was trained in the Milanese area but carried out his teaching activity in Venice for an extended period. He distinguished himself through his literary and scientific interests, but, above all, through his encyclopaedic conception of knowledge. First, I provide some details about Giorgio Valla’s life, his activity as a translator and publisher of Greek scientific works, and his library. Second, I analyse his interest in Cicero and Greek rhetoric, and his commentaries on Cicero’s works: De fato, Topica, Timaeus, Rhetorica ad Herennium (which, according to Valla, was a work of Cicero), Partitiones oratoriae, and Tusculanae disputationes. Finally, I present Valla’s posthumous encyclopaedia, the De expetendis ac fugiendis rebus, and, in particular, Cicero’s presence in its books on rhetoric.Riassunto : Cicerone è stato un punto di riferimento fondamentale per l’educazione scolastica e per il sistema delle artes liberales, soprattutto per la retorica e la filosofia, dall’antichità al Rinascimento. Intendo concentrare la mia attenzione sull’ambiente veneziano della seconda metà del XV secolo e, in particolare, su Giorgio Valla. Questo umanista si è formato nell’area milanese e ha svolto la sua attività didattica a Venezia per un lungo periodo. Si è distinto per i suoi interessi letterari e scientifici, ma soprattutto per la sua concezione enciclopedica del sapere. Prima di tutto, fornisco alcuni dettagli sulla vita di Giorgio Valla, sulla sua attività di traduttore ed editore di opere scientifiche greche e sulla sua biblioteca. In secondo luogo, analizzo il suo interesse per Cicerone e la retorica greca e i suoi commenti sulle opere di Cicerone: De fato, Topica, Timaeus, Rhetorica ad Herennium (che, secondo Valla, era opera di Cicerone), Partitiones oratoriae, Tusculanae disputationes. Infine, presento l’enciclopedia postuma di Valla, il De expetendis ac fugiendis rebus, e, in particolare, tratto della presenza di Cicerone nei libri sulla retorica.Biography Amedeo A. He carried out research activities in the Universities of Turin and Milan, where he currently teaches Latin language courses. His most recent contributions focus on the ancient rhetoric and the relationship between teaching and literary production in the Roman world.
