Description: In 62 BC, Cicero defended the Greek poet and new Roman citizen A. Licinius Archias against the charge of usurping civil rights. This extraordinary linguistic work of art by Cicero is one of the most important sources for the history of Roman citizenship in the late Republic. This study deals with this speech, which is the oldest surviving, perhaps even the first public plea by a Roman senator for the value of literature and especially for Greek education. Coskun also examines the speech in terms of the inclusion of foreign "friends" in Roman society and the populus Romanus. On the other hand, he also shows the instrumentalization of the friendship semantics in the context of the bestowal or defence of the civitas Romana.
