Description: Barbara C. Bowen - Dept of French and Italian, Vanderbilt University [Abstract] The contribution of Cicero’s discussion of facetiae in the De oratore to Renaissance rhetoric and literature has been consistently undervalued. This article presents evidence that Cicero’s theory and practice of wit were important in Italy, Germany, France and England in at least three areas: manuals of rhetoric and poetics; a variety of other theoretical works; and compilations of jokes and "wise sayings"
