Description: In this paper I took into account the development of rhetoric, in particular of the rhetoric which began to be taught in the schools through handbooks written in the island Rhodes. This development produced not only a great refinement of the communication instrument, but also another stage in the artistic use of the language. At Rome a scholar handbook of Rhetoric arrived brought (and perhaps written) by Apollonius Molon, Cicero’s teacher and friend. But in Rome rhetoric was employed in politics as an instrument of the courts of justice. In the years 149-78 BC criminal prosecution became a political weapon regularity employed. The teaching place of rhetoric was not more the forum, where the great orators acted, but a school. The first Roman school of rhetoric we know was open by Plotius Gallus, head of Latini dicendi magistri, a friend and favourite of C.Marius. The censors Cn.Domitius Ahenobarbus and L.Licinius Crassus 92 BC tried to close this school but vainly, as it seems (Suet.gramm.25.1). [Author]
