Descrizione: [Abstract] In the Latin rhetorical lexicon, along with other metaphors from the muliebris cultus, the plural calamistri, which properly identifies the 'curling iron', indicates an excessively refined style, which is so artificial and exaggerated that it distorts the normal compositio verborum. This meaning made it particularly suitable to describe the lexis of Maecenas, trusted man of the Roman princeps Augustus, protector of the arts and author himself of writings which did not enjoy wide public acclaim due to their themes and expressive form. The reception of the technical term calamistri allows us to reconstruct the critical fortune of Maecenas' opera since the sarcastic judgement by Augustus.
