Description: [John Adams – the American Cicero? From the genealogy of the Res publica Americana] In establishing a new republic, the Founding Fathers felt it was essential to study carefully the lessons that history had taught, in order to avoid the fate of previous republics. Above all, the Americans drew on the example of Republican Rome, which for five hundred years maintained a system of government aspiring to orderly liberty, underpinned by a combination of public civic virtue and an effective institutional design. This was possible because the American colonies had retained the system of education based on grammar schools, which was common in England at the time, providing all educated Americans with a basic understanding of the reputation and writings of Cicero, who embodied eloquence, moral virtue and opposition to tyranny. In this way, he became a source of inspiration for the Founding Fathers, and John Adams explicitly regarded himself as the American Cicero. In this article, the authors seek to address the question of the validity of such a position taken by the second President of the United States. To this end, they compare the fundamental political categories of Cicero and Adams, highlighting their similarities and differences. They also examine the extent to which Cicero’s thought can be applied to the reality of the young American republic. [Authors] In Polish
