Description: The main objective of this chapter is to shed light on the Late Republican spatial dimensions and qualities of Roman administration and governance through Activity Space research (AS) and Cicero's letters. This chapter studies some spatial aspects of the Late Republican Roman administration via architectural, epigraphic, and literary evidence. Instead of concentrating on space production, this chapter analyses Roman administration through one branch of AS research, which partially derives from urban planning research and has later been used in everything possible, from transportation to segregation research. AS is a concept used to describe the measurable spatial behaviour of individuals as functions in time. These administrative functions, widely understood, are law courts and administrative centres, archives and libraries, senatorial and equestrian domus, and the representations of magistrates in public space along with the growing built public space. This previously applied AS research and Geographical Information System (GIS) analysis is mirrored against Cicero's personal experiences within the Roman administrative space, mainly from his letters supplemented by selected other writings. This chapter looks at how Cicero's activity matched his peers and, on the other hand, how it differed from theirs. [Editor]
