Description: [Aubert-Baillot, Sophie][Abstract] The use of antilogy, in its different forms, in Cicero's correspondence reveals that the author ascribed to this dialectical device a Socratic origin before he distinguished in his philosophical works, thus following Antiochus of Ascalon, an Aristotelian disputatio in utramque partem from a Socratic practice of contra omnia disserere. It also underlines the double origin, both Platonic and Aristotelian, of the word problema, which is frequently linked to dialectical reasonings such as dilemmas or arguments on both sides.
