Description: Cicéron, pour avoir raison de ses adversaires, se plaisait aux jeux de mots et recourait volontiers à la métonymie. Ainsi, les partisans et amis de P. Clodius Pulcher, le tribun popularis, auraient été des hommes à peine sortis de l’esclavage, ou étrangers à Rome. Or, si certains appartenaient aux classes laborieuses, d’autres étaient issus de l’élite romaine ; d’autres enfin étaient des Italiens devenus citoyens romains depuis plus de trente ans, mais ils attendaient encore d’être inscrits sur les registres du cens. Clodius, his friends, his followers, under Cicero’s gaze : Cicero, to win over his opponents, used to play on words and to resort to metonymy. The followers and friends of P. Clodius Pulcher, the popular tribune, were thus labelled as just out of slavery, or as foreigners. But if some of them belonged to the working classes, others came from the Roman elite ; others, at last, were enfranchised Italians, who had been waiting since more than thirty years to be inscribed in the Roman tribes.
