Description: [Lentano, Mario] [Abstract] Seneca the Elder’s controversia VII, 2 – Popillius accused of misconduct because he killed Cicero in the days of the triumviral proscriptions – is examined from two different viewpoints: as an example of what happens when a historical event moves from reality into the realm of school exercises, and as a political theme debated by declaimers under the reign of Augustus, just a few years after the assassination of Cicero. The princeps succeeded in manipulating and re-writing recent history, in order to cast the blame of Cicero’s death on Mark Antony, and declamation faithfully reflects Augustan propaganda by inventing the character of Popillius as a killer sent by Antony ; but maybe a new interpretation of this character is possible.
