Description: In questo contributo si esamina la posizione di Cicerone in merito alla natura del rapporto significante-referente e, relativamente a ciò, si confuta la tesi di Gay (1929): a giudizio dell'autore Cicerone guarda a questa relazione sotto una luce antropologica piuttosto che linguistica. Inoltre, l'autore esamina il comportamento di Cicerone nel contesto di alcuni dibattiti linguistici del suo tempo, riguardanti l'analogia, l'etimologia, l'uso degli ellenismi, delle formule arcaicizzanti e il ruolo dell'auctoritas. This paper examines Cicero's position on the nature of the signifier-referent relationship and, in this regard, refutes Gay's thesis: in the author's view, Cicero views this relationship in an anthropological rather than a linguistic light. Furthermore, Cicero's behaviour is addressed in the context of certain linguistic debates of his time, concerning analogy, etymology, the use of Hellenisms, archaicising formulae and the role of auctoritas.
