Description: [Abstract]: The nature of the rhetorical training conducted by Philo of Larissa, head of the so-called Fourth Academy, can be understood through examination of Cicero's rhetorical and philosophical works. Rhetoric in the Fourth Academy focused on both abstract and concrete problems, but probably did not emphasize the twisted legal issues which were commonly the business of rhetorical schools. From the formal viewpoint, the Academy's rhetorical training seems to have followed the established procedures of Academic dialectic. Philo appears to have taught a theory of rhetorical invention that helped first to narrow down a complex problem to single questions and then to find arguments relevant to their consideration.
