Descrizione: In this paper, the perusal of some excerpts of Cicero’s political and forensic speeches shows that Cicero uses the rhetorical and ideological device of the slogan of nobilitas in three different ways. In some cases, Cicero takes for granted and he highlights the family relations linking the great protagonists of Roman history and the people he defends. In other cases, he casts doubt on these relations even when they are potentially still ongoing. In the remaining cases, he tries to prove that these relations are irreversibly broken and he treats the living person against whom he is addressing his invective as being totally unrelated to the gens they belong to. Finally, the paper focuses on the third strategy adopted by Cicero and it shows how this strategy can be used to debate whether nobilitas is a valid argument per se and whether it contributes to public popularity and to political validation.[Bellini, Giacomo] Quotes Pro Flacco, Pro Rabirio Postumo, In Verrem I & II, Pro Sestio.
