Descrizione: Panaitios' treatise Περὶ τοῦ καθήκοντος is considered the best-known writing by a Hellenistic Stoic, as it served as a source for Cicero in the first two books of De officiis. Modern scholars have long held the view that Panaitios wrote the doctrine of behavior developed in this book for Roman aristocrats whom he had met in the circle of Scipio Africanus. According to the communis opinio, the Stoic developed a philosophically sublimated code of ethics for Roman senators. This interpretation contrasts with the view that he intended to offer a doctrine of behavior for adolescent citizens of late Hellenistic poleis. This essay examines the communis opinio by investigating which social conventions and cultural norms, which fields of action and role models Panaitios addressed. On the basis of a reconstruction of the structure and train of thought of the text, which is lost in the original, characteristics of the implicit reader are determined, which allow conclusions to be drawn about the intended addressees. The analysis leads to the conclusion that Panaitios was primarily thinking of readers who came from the leading circles of late Hellenistic poleis when he conceived his doctrine of behavior; in particular, the critical examination of euergetism, the clear distinction between elite and masses and the Panhellenic awareness of the past point to them. In contrast, the Stoics paid no attention to the specific characteristics of the Roman Republic. If he was nevertheless convinced that his theory of behavior was also applicable to Roman senators, it was because, like many Greeks of his time, he mistakenly considered Rome to be a polis that was larger, but not fundamentally different from other poleis. An appendix summarizes what can be determined today about the life and pupils of Panaitios. [Author]
