Description: This article examines the value of the indirect tradition of Cicero’s De inventione for the reconstruction of the text. Using selected examples from Quintilian and Victorinus, it shows that the editors’ disdain for the testimony of the ancient readers that has prevailed for a good 150 years in our critical editions is unfounded. The article therefore argues in favour of an unprejudiced examination and  evaluation of all existing textual witnesses on the basis of genealogical principles and text-immanent criteria.
