Description: This chapter discusses commentaries written around 1130–1140 by Thierry of Chartres on De inventione and Rhetorica ad Herennium. Both works reflect Thierry's commitment to the language arts and the Platonist cosmology as well as his philosophical outlook regarding the ‘seminal causes’ of natural and divine truths. His prologue to the art of rhetoric also attests to his methodological innovation. In addition, Thierry makes a distinction between ‘extrinsic’ and ‘intrinsic’ knowledge of an art and explores the genres of narration, the levels of style, and stylistic ornamentation [Editor].
