Descrizione: For most people, education is certainly one of the qualities they consider impossible to have in excess. However, if we examine Cicero's statements in his speeches on this subject, it seems that he does not share this view. On the contrary, he openly defends the opinion that it is entirely possible not only to have too little, but also too much education, or at least the wrong kind of education. Admittedly, this second variant remains a special case compared to the standard criticism of simple ignorance, but it is frequent enough to warrant a closer examination of the relationship between the two criticisms. These are statements made in direct confrontation with his political and legal opponents, and therefore fall within the realm of verbal aggression. The complex interaction between education and insult in Cicero's remarks is at the heart of the following reflections. [Author] The article cites In Pisonem and analyzes the accusations of insufficienza doctrinae, but also the paradoxical reproach of excessive/false erudition (philosophische Bildung), as well as the attacks against Piso's philhellenism and epicureanism. (In Pisonem §§ 1 ff., 73 ff., etc.). The article also focuses on Philippica II and the criticism of Mark Antony's religious and legal ignorance (augur, auspices) and the ridicule of pseudo-doctrina and false cultural ostentation (Phil. 2, 22; 29; 80 sq.). Philippica III contains a rare example of the reproach of excessive Bildung, via stylistic caricature (Phil. 3, 22). The article continues its analysis with In Verrem, Actio secunda, in particular II, 4, which elaborates on the opposition between a total lack of culture and the misappropriation of Greek culture, and denounces the ostentatious συλλογή of works of art without intellectual understanding. Pro Murena is used to mock the excessive juristische Bildung of Sulpicius Rufus and to caricature Cato of Utica as a doctrinaire philosopher out of touch with political reality. De inv. 1, 36 and Rhet. ad Her. 3, 13 are also mentioned. [PhR]
