Descrizione: The analysis of justice has always been at the core of the Roman concept of bellum iustum. During the Republican period, the legitimacy of war still depended on the compliance with the formal procedures of ius fetiale. However, Cicero’s writings emphasise the cultural link between rituality and justice underpinning the substantial sphere of law. Despite the fact that bellum iustum arose from the respect of fetial procedures, belligerence required the previous existence of a nexus between recourse to force and its reasons.
