Description: Cicero has been a fundamental reference point for school education and the system of artes liberales, especially for rhetoric and philosophy, from ancient times to the Renaissance. I focus on the Venetian environment in the second half of the 15th century and, in particular, on Giorgio Valla—trained in the Milanese area but long active as a teacher in Venice—whose encyclopaedic conception of knowledge informs his translations, editorial work and library; I examine his interest in Cicero and Greek rhetoric and his commentaries on De fato, Topica, Timaeus, Rhetorica ad Herennium (attributed by Valla to Cicero), Partitiones oratoriae, and Tusculanae disputationes, before turning to the posthumous encyclopaedia De expetendis ac fugiendis rebus and Cicero’s presence in its books on rhetoric.
