Description: In De re publica, Cicero sets out the three tasks of a theory of an exemplary polity. Two books each deal with the ideal constitution of the state (I-II), its legal and moral basis (III-IV) and the ideal statesman (V-VI). Cicero precedes each of these three pairs of dialogues with a personal preface (Proöminium). In De legibus, he supplements these reflections with discussions on natural law, a detailed description of the existing sacred law and the state and constitutional law of Rome, which is intended to demonstrate its uniqueness in terms of political stability and optimality.
