Description: A letter from Filelfo Francesco to Teodoro Gaza, 15th july 1474. F. breaks the long-standing silence with Theodore Gaza and wants to hear from him, laments the situation of instability and insecurity under Pope Sixtus IV, marked by the whirlwinds of war unleashed by this pontiff, and regrets the happy period experienced under the wise Nicolas V, a lover of peace in contrast to his current successor. He then questions the present condition of Theodore Gaza at a tumultuous time and reiterates his own inner imperturbability despite an unfavorable environment for culture. Finally, he seeks the Byzantine scholar's approval regarding a problem close to his heart and reiterates his view that the Greek κατόρθωμα corresponds to rectum officium, while καθῆκον to commune officium, denouncing Cicero's misunderstanding of the Greek lexicon, in this regard relying on the grammatical authority of Dionysius of Halicarnassus. He therefore awaits the opinion of Theodore Gaza in support or otherwise of his philological opinion [Author]
