Description: In March 2020, Xueyong Xu (ou Hsu Hsue-yung), a taiwanese scholar, published the second edition of his translation of Cicero's On Old Age (or Joint Publishing Co., Ltd.). This revised edition still has some obvious problems. The base text used by Xu is the collated text in the Teubner series. In his "About the Translation" (p. 79), Xu cites this version as the most important of all the translations of Cicero and dated this edition as 1997. However, this edition was first published in 1917 (1997 is only a reprint) and has long been replaced by the Oxford edition (OCT) by Prof. J. G. F. Powell. Mr Xu does not mention Mr. Wang's contribution to the translation of Cicero, nor the earliest Chinese translation of On Old Age (Liang Shiqiu, Commercial Press 1931, translated from Latin). The author believes that Xu's On Old Age does not present the original text of Cicero as accurately as he wished. According to the author's very subjective reading experience, Mr. Wang Huan-sheng's translation is accurate, vivid, and still a must for those who want to know more about Cicero's thought.Text in Chinese.
