Descrizione: [Svobodová, Dana] [Abstract] The term contrarius — usually designating a permanent quality of a certain phenomenon — is largely used in Cicero's theoretical writings due to the ability of this concept to express a relation between two subjects. These characteristics and especially the fact that contrarius owing to its general validity — contrary to its synonyms — may be substituted for some other word of a more precise meaning or even for a whole group of such words — is used by Cicero in various repeated topics. Comparing several parallel themes we find out that contrarius is a significant variation factor of Cicero's special style (in his speeches and letters it appears rarely).
