Descrizione: [The concept of "libertas" in Cicero's parallel rhetorical discourses] One of the most important notions used in the vocabulary of the late Roman Republic is libertas. Nevertheless , the meaning of that notion has been disputed by the scholars, as it is interwoven with the highly controversial issue of the character of the Republican polity during Cicero's era. The main question as concerning that character lies on the political role and power each of the constitutional bodies of the Roman Republic held. Hence, the majority of the scholars argue that the Senate actually ruled the state, in an essentially oligarchical or at least aristocratic regime. Fewer, though in an upward trend during the last decades, underline the predominant role of the people's assemblies in running the state. Whithin the aforementioned framework I undertook the task to analyze the notion of libertas in Cicero's parallel sets of speeches, i.e. those delivered before the people and the Senate under the same topic from 63-43 BCE. The purpose of this study is to shed light on what content Cicero recognized in libertas and subsequently on whether he, for some a highly controversial figure himself, was consistent or not in using this notion when addressing the people and the senators. After analyzing the use of libertas in his parallel sets of speeches, I concluded that Cicero basically remained consistent in front of both constitutional bodies, which he saw as complementary to each other, and depicted libertas as the opposite of slavery (servitus) potentially imposed by external and mainly, due to the topics of those speeches, internal foes.[Author] In Greek
